July Music Favourites

As a singer I hope to blog to document my personal musical journey over the coming years. Music is such a huge part of my life, I’m sure you’ll see this being reflected in my blog.  I’ll also regularly share with you musical theatre reviews, and of course as I’m about to… my music favourites!

This month the majority of the songs I’ve been listening to have been to have on in the background whilst I’ve been working on job applications, and songs to wind down to of an evening, but there maybe one I’ll sing at full belt when I think that noone is listening in also thrown in for good measure.

As you may be able to tell from my playlist below my music taste is quite varied; as a musician I can appreciate almost all genres of music. I’m the type of person who will be listening to classical music one minute, and then pretty instanteously blasting out a rock ballad the next. Here’s a selection of some of my go-to songs this month.

All I ask – Adele

Since I saw the live coverage of Adele at Glastonbury I’ve been reminded of Adele’s newest album. I have been more drawn to her slower numbers such as ‘All I ask‘ and ‘Million Years ago‘ but I’ve also loved hearing something different in songs like ‘Send My Love To Your New Lover’  which even though I wasn’t entirely keen on at first, has really grown on me recently.

Tilted – Christine and the Queens

I discovered Christine and the Queens, after watching her on Graham Norton’s evening show recently. I was absolutely in awe of her overall performance, I think she’s an artist to watch out for over the coming years. If you’ve not heard of Christine… before, I’d thoroughly recommend watching a live performance of ‘Tilted’ here (just don’t blame me when you’re unable to get this song out your head too)!

River flows in you – Yiruma

I love listening to classical piano pieces like this when I need to work on something. I am easily distracted by lyrics, as I’ll undoubtably want to sing along. So, I’ll call upon somebody such as Yiruma to rescue me when I really need to focus.

Our day will come – Amy Winehouse

It’s been five years since the one of the world’s greatest ever musicians passed, and I’ve been reminiscing some of her work. This song was covered and released posthumously on her album ‘Lioness.’ It needs no explanation, just go listen if you haven’t before!

He lives in you – The Lion King Broadway original cast

The Lion King Musical has to be my favourite musical of all. It’s a story which I’m sure makes many of us nostalgic; I feel instantly uplifted whenever the soundtrack comes on. I love the sentiment behind ‘He lives in you‘ which is all about about a legacy living on, don’t be surprised if this will forever live on in my music favourites too.

All of London is here tonight – Finding Neverland the Musical original cast

This is the first full company number from this new musical based on the life and work of J.M. Barrie. It’s one of those musical songs which really captures your imagination, I can absolutely visualise this song without having seen it performed live on stage, but bring on January 2017 when I will no longer have to, as Finding Neverland flies over to London!

Wona – Mumford & Sons

Have you heard? Mumford and Sons released a five song mini-album in June after their recent trip to South Africa. They went for a mini tour and collaborated with artists, Baaba Maal, The Very Best, and Beatenberg. My favourites from the album are ‘Wona’ and ‘There will be time.’  I will forever have a place in my heart for Mumford & Sons after having seen them live at an Itunes festival, I’m so pleased and jump for joy everytime they reappear with a new album.

If you like the look of my playlist, why not follow me on Spotify where you can play and see the rest of my July favourites? I’d absolutely love to connect, so I can follow the music that you’ve been listening to too. My Spotify is: https://open.spotify.com/user/21ugk2xs4tefhhwlmk76elt3a

Which artists have you been listening to this month? Leave me a comment below, I’d love to know what songs made up the soundtrack to your month.

Laura Rose

Introduction

My name is Laura, and I’m a 24 year old from Hertfordshire in England. Nice to meet you!

Those of you who know me well may know that I previously blogged through my Year abroad escapés in France and Spain. I studied Modern Languages and Business at University and spent one year of my time studying abroad at universities in Angers and Seville. During my time away I learnt a lot about myself, for one I love writing. There is something so enchanting about having my own little creative outlet, so I have decided to start afresh. After having had some time away from blogging I have come back reinvigorated and inspired with ideas for future posts. Let’s start with a minimum of two posts per week, and go from there.

On my blog expect to find a mixture of topics I’m passionate about talking about in real life (it’s so nice to find someone who will  listen!) Anyway as I was saying, I have a lust for travel, beauty, music, musical theatre, acting, singing, cooking, fine cuisine, healthy eating, and perhaps the  not so healthy cocktails!

I’ll keep this first introductory post short and crossed fingers sweet, as I hope that you will gradually get to know more and more about me through my posts. Is there anything you would like to see from me? Have you started a new blog recently? Do let me know by writing to me in the comments, I’d love to hear.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my first post!

Till next time,

Laura Rose
